Wes Ower Charity Comp 2026 Results

This now annual event was held on Sunday 8th March 2026 at Siblyback Lake. The competition was open to all anglers, not just club members and has now become a fixture on the South West Competition Calender.

From 7.30am anglers began gathering in the car park in anticipation of a few fish. Although good prizes are up for grabs it has proved to be an enjoyable and friendly competition, and this year it was good to see a few new faces as well . Registration took place in the main building where anglers contributed to the Cornwall Air Ambulance Charity and drew their morning zone.

The lake was divided into two zones to help prevent overcrowding in the favoured spots. Zone A was the southern half of the lake including Crylla Bay, Stocky bay and the southern half of the west shore. Zone B was the Northern half of the lake including Two Meadows, North Sore and the Northern half of the Lake. The angler fished their drawn zone from 0930-1230 and then swapped over to fish again from 1300-1600.

The winner and placings decided on the heaviest bag of fish up to a maximum of 5 fish.

Following the briefing, anglers set off to their chosen spot within their drawn zone .

The lake has been fishing exceptionally well in the last week and I was a bit concerned that most would bag up within the hour and sit twiddling their thumbs for the next few hours. However the weather had different ideas on the day ! A thick and cold fog had descended on the lake overnight and refused to budge all day. Visibility was down to about 50 yards and generally the fish didn’t like it. One or two anglers did catch their 4 fish morning limit within an hour but the vast majority found the going tough. Zone A in particular fished really hard with only 2 fish caught by the 10 or so anglers in the zone all morning. Many fared better in the other zone so there was still hope for those struggling anglers after swapping over for the afternoon session.

Fog !

Many anglers stopped off in the main building for tea/coffee and biscuits and to warm up during to swap-over period.

The fishing did pick up in the afternoon and fish were caught from Stocky Bay and Crylla.

Everyone seemed to enjoy the event which is an achievement considering the weather. And the prizes and trophy were presented by Leon Fisher, Head of Fisheries, South West Lakes Trust. Results :

1st  Pete Williams (£200 SWLT Voucher)

2nd Paul Wallace (fly box and flies)

3rd Keith Burnett (fly box and Flies)

Biggest fish Phillip Hoskin 2lbs 4 ¾ oz (£20)

Special thanks must go to South West Lakes Trust, and Leon Fisher in particular for providing the first prize and trophy and assisting with the event. Also to Nigel Evans and Paul Bancroft who very generously donated the prize for the biggest fish.

The club would also like to thank everyone that came along and contributed to the day which we hope everyone enjoyed.

Most importantly £230 has been raised for the Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust and a cheque is already on it’s way to them. Wes was very keen to support the Air Ambulance Service .

The event will be taking place again early next season and we hope to see you all again next year. Could Pete make it 3 in a row !
