Derek Aunger Floating Line Competition 11th May 2025

After speaking to anglers who fished on Friday Sunday was set up to be a fantastic days sport, the
rainbows were taking dry flies and buzzers like it was their first meal. Andy reported 4 fish in 40
minutes or so.
But the weather changed by Sunday, just 9 SFFA members braved the elements to fish what for me
is one of the best competition we organise. Catch Measure and release up to ten fish very
competitive and anyone could win. Just pick the right fly in the right area of Siblyback. Usually by
now there are a few beetles about – but not so far this year….MMMM hawthorns and buzzers then.
From the bank we could see the wind swirling around and changing direction which way to go where
shall I start?
Anglers marched off some two meadows, some headed North Shore but knowing how good Crylla
was on Friday Adam & myself headed there. Adam was quickly into his first Rainbow just after the
9.30am start, a good size over 40cm from Crylla bay. Me too soon after a superb 45 cm off to a good
start. Andy soon joined us in Crylla – Then the rain came – Torrential rain no more midges no more
Hawthorn flies nothing. Soaked.
Ben later reported the rain bought the fish into North shore taking 4 cracking hard fighting rainbows
in quick succession. Andy moved to Stocky Bay, I swapped rods, trying different flies, Damsel,
Orange blob, Black & Peacock, Cormorants, Sparkler, Sibly Sizzler etc etc… Adam followed Andy
down to Sticky bay, Get in – The sizzler did the trick – “Blast”?? Lost this one at the net, hard fighting
wow these fish just go and go. Still at least some confidence in a fly that works. As the rain stopped
the fish started moving again in Crylla, I landed 3 fairly quickly, Sparkler and Sizzler doing the
business.
Ben & Matt having walked the lake fished all around joined myself in Crylla bay but stuck with the
dry’s, Ben lost a couple, I managed to pick up the occasional fish putting me on 6. Adam had walked
the entire perimeter and came back to Crylla, Harry joined us around 3.30pm reporting that Ben had
bagged his ten. Darren was going quite well too.
Blast I missed another, then another, YEHAA at last hooked up 10 to four cast again and YES my
eighth fish. Quick measure and return, too late now, 4.0pm time was up. I cast long and reeled my
line in – Bang another – returned without measuring.
Ben Won the day with 10 fish & 408cm. Ron 2 nd with 8 at 309cm and Andy 3 rd 7 fish for 265cm.
Another great Siblyback competition, many thanks to Ben & Matt for organising this event.
